Established in 2010, Neuroscience is one of Carleton’s newest and most rapidly growing academic departments.?Currently, faculty have a range of research interests, each of which relate to investigations of mechanisms of brain pathology and their influence on mental health. We commonly explore the impact of psychological stressors and environmental stressors on the brain in order to understand how various factors that can damage the brain and/or disrupt homeostasis result in pathology.

From bullying to environmental pollutants, from over-eating to chronic pain, our bodies are constantly exposed to stressors. Our mission is to explore the neurobiological underpinnings of mental health problems that arise from psychosocial and environmental stressors encountered throughout the lifespan, and how they are modulated by genetic, cultural and gender factors, towards the ultimately goal of improving mental health.
